Has anyone on here been diagnosed with generalized anxiety? If so, were you still able to get pregnant? Do you think the treatment for anxiety lengthened the process of trying to get pregnant or shortened it? Also, can you mix fertility & anxiety drugs?

As a previous person stated, it depends what medication they give you. Typically psychiatrist's will prescribe Zoloft or some other kind of SSRI. Usually they interfere with your sex drive, ie make it harder to become aroused and/or lower your desire for sex. However, they do not effect fertility. They also do not interact with hormone medications, however, you should let you gynecologist know about all medications you are on and as soon as pregnancy occurs typically you will be removed from the SSRI as it has not been tested on pregnant women as to how it effects the fetus.

The treatment for generalized anxiety disorders invovled anti-anxiety drugs and SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) as well as some counselling. Obviously the counselling will not help your chances for fertility and it is unlikely that the drugs will have any effect. It may not be advisable to be on some of these drugs while pregnant so make sure you consult your doctor if you become pregnant while on the medication. Some of the SSRI can cause temporary sexual dysfunction. It can lead to an inability to acheive orgasm. So in males, yes, it would temporary effect their fertility because they cannot ejaculate. For females, they should still be able to conceive however sex may be less pleasurable.

Yes, you can get pregnant when being treated for anxiety. However, make sure your doctor knows you are trying so that you are put on a medication that won't hurt the baby when you do conceive. Your conception time should not be any different from any other person...which is normally 6 to 12 months. The one thing that can impact your chance of conception is if you obsess with worry about getting pregnant. Remember, one of the causes of infertility is worrying that it won't happen.

Oh, MG! The meds will screw up that!!!

Anyway, define 'normal'!

If there is a good reason to be anxious, then, it is NOT something that needs to be treated!

If you are a very anxiety prone person, why would you want to change that? I consider it a survival trait! Anyway, I avoid things and situations that cause me anxiety. I changed my lifestyle, because it is MY life!

You might do the same type thing, but, do see a quack, er, I mean a shrink!
