It used to be acceptable to tip 15% (30 years ago). It has gone up over the years. I don't think that alot of people know that servers do not make minimum wage, at least. They are just ignorant...and cheap. I always tip 20% for adequate service...more if it was really good!

I've worked for tips before. I tried raising two children on it. If a person can only afford a 5 - 10 tip , fine. If they can order a large meal, reward your server. If the server doesn't do their job and/or has an attitude like "dropping" the plates to the table, that's uncalled for. If the sever is making sure your needs are met and keeps you feeling welcome, give extra. They are there to support a family too. So, next time you go out, ask yourself if you're doing everything to please your customer, agood tip should be awarded. I have a set a friends that tip well when we go out. We leave a tip according to how we're greeted by the server, how we're treated ( not like just a person), drink refills ( a must with guys), removal of plates, and not being pushed out (being offered a cup of coffee afterward so we can talk and enjoy the meal). Remember to treat others as you want to be treated. It will work.

I believe that I'm a good tipper. I usually tip about 15%. If I like my waitor or waitress a lot I might tip 20%. But some people tip what they can. I dont think that the waitor/waitress should complain. I believe that it's your job to keep the customers happy whether its busy or not. I think its crazy when you have such poor service that the waitor/waitress only comes to the table once to check on you and once to bring out your order and then complain that they dont get a good tip. I understand too that you have to make some sort of money. But dont forget that you have a choice of what job you want to have. You didnt just get stuck working at a restaurant.

I don't go out enough, but when I do I make sure to give a generous tip, 15-20%. I work at a restauant too. Also I hate it when a person orders something that cost around $125. Then they complain about how lazy the service is. It is because they have such a large order. Then when they leave they don't leave any tip at all! It should be mandatory. I don't get why either.

you make $2.13 an hour!!!!
good lord! where do you live? That's outrageous minimum wage here in BC (Canada) I think is around $8 something ($Cdn)
When I worked in the service industry - I always found Americans to be generally speaking, pretty bad tippers (not as Bad as the Ozzies or Japanese though)
As a rule I would reccomend 10% is the min. tip, I think 20% necessitates some pretty excellent service. I always tip high though having worked for tips myself.

I've always been a great tipper. Sometimes I have left up to a 50-75% tip. It's a good investment because the next time I come in, the waiters/employees will be clamouring to see who gets to assist me and it's a guarantee of the best service!

I almost always tip 20% or better. When I receive poor service, the tip goes down to 10 or 15% depending on the situation.

Yeah I know...people are cheap that's why they tip so bad. and that's also why they "ur the best they have". I work at a restuarant after working there for a few days I moved to the Party section so all i do is parties. Even then they tip u bad...sometimes they only pay the gratuty.
I think i'm a very good tipper....

If I can't afford a decent tip....I stay at home...of course how big the tip is depends on the service....I think it's wrong about restaurants not paying well....it really shouldn't be on the customer to have to pay tip after spending money for meal...but for some reason that's how it goes....I really never understood why restaurants don't pay better to their employees...it's not like the tip is coming out of their pocket...find a banquet restaurant to work for so you don't need to rely on tips.....tips will be just extra...

Depends on the server. If he/she is excellent, then I'll tip 25%. If he/she sucks, then I'll leave a penny. That way, he/she doesn't think I just forgot. Of course, there are the ones in between. Servers are on a sliding scale.
