Islamists oppress, terrorize, and slaughter people all over the world, routinely. Apparently the Quran gives them permission and/or commands them to exterminate all non-Muslims and impose a rigid religious tyranny. Any variation from the official religion is punishable by death.
Now, Iran wants the U.N. to make people everywhere stop saying bad things about Islam.
Why do you think Islamic governments are afraid to trust their own citizens with freedom of speech, freedom of religion, women's rights, etc.?
And why are they trying to deny these freeedoms to everyone else in the world?

Your question presupposes your politics so I know I'm not going to get a "Best Answer" from you... But I'm going to try and tell you the truth.
Everything you say about Islam has been just as true about Christianity at various points in history. For 1000 years it was Christians imposing religious tyrany and exterminating those who would not convert. Ironically when Christianity was at its worst Islamic countries were the home of religious tolerance. Nothing going on in the islamic world today is as bad as what Christians had going in Europe, and at the time everyone agreed that the bible mandated it.
And don't think for a second that there aren't sectors of the religious right in America what wouldn't love to institute some religious tyrany. You've got people like Pat Robertson saying we should have special religious courts for people who commit murder because they were acting under the will of God, and that non-christians shouldn't be allowed to hold public office.
Your question shouldn't be directed at "Islam" so much as at "Religious fanatics" in general. If your "Holy Book" has all the answers then the supression of alternative viewpoints by any means necessary becomes justified. Thats as true for Al Queida, as for the Spanish Inquisition, as for the Salem Witch Trials.
So don't blame Islam just because the current wave of religious fanatics happen to be Muslims. Islam is a fine faith with strong values. A peaceful religion when it isn't being insanely twisted to justify evil.
You want to defame "Fanaticism" in all its forms? Go right ahead!

At the time of Christ-the Jewish people had the same problems-so many false Messias,to many schisms,-CHrist was crucified, because his religious leaders needed him gone. The word of GOD was twisted and used .We are fighting a religious war but not really a holy war-The Hebrew nations of old and the Arab nations of today cannot and did not unite because they each hold on to A truth

Very simple. Islamics are people with very narrow minds. Just consider, to blow themselves with a bomb only with the purpose of killing a bunch of their own countrymen, usually innocent women and children, you must be incapable of seeing beyond your nose. Besides, they are still living in times of mohama, believing that they will receive a flock of virgins if they die fighting for islam ( I wonder what islamic women will receive ) . Men can marry four wives, if you say anything against mohama they will try to kill you ( remember Salman Rushdie ), if you try to leave islam they will try to kill you. For many things they will try to kill you. Do you have enough ?

Islamic governments are theocracies. History shows theocracies rule over the most horrific periods of human history. Why should it be different for Islam?

Its not a matter of being afraid, its what they believe. They believe in Islam and in Allah, whether its insane or not. People who believe that Islam is a religion of peace also believe that Osama Bin Laden is a preacher!

freedom stirs up individual thought different than those of the collective. quran gives them permission to slaughter the same as the bible does. it's interpretation, extremists using religion to further their own "political" motives.

It is FUNDAMENTALISM and Fundamentalist views. I'm sure there are plently of moderate and liberal Muslims that have issues with the same problems and governments. Why are they doing it? Fundamentalism and theocracies can be very very evil and about power, control, and suppresion of all other views.
