These soldiers are facing murder charges... Conduct and ethnics are very different when you are fighting to stay alive, and I believe that these men and women are doing what they have to do to survive.. What are your opinions? Remember they are fighting so that we have the freedom that we sometimes take for granted, wrong or right it is what it is.

The latest guys were not following orders, they got carried away and tried set an example. They were wrong, and what they did was murder. Remember they are there to protect us from some foreign force coming into our house taking us outside and killing us, just because they couldn't find who they were looking for.
It is against the Uniformed Code of Military Conduct to follow an unlawful order. If you know it is wrong, you are responsible if you follow it. No matter what. Our brave young Men and Women are there to fight terroritst, and help the Iraqi people establish a peaceful law abiding country. The are not there to kill unarmed civilians.
People do need to keep in mind, these are individuals not a reflection of our entire military force over there. I am truley ashamed of the one the was a Corpsman, but I am ashamed of him, not the Navy Hospital Corps.

Well you have to remember that there are certain rules of war. For example a soldier cannot shoot at an ambulance during a war. A country has to be allowed to pick up their dead. So a country does have the right punish a soldier if he breaks one of those rules. I think that in some cases the person in charge should be punished, but not if the problem does not directly lead to them as the cause

Do you want an honest answer or do you want someone to sugar coat it because "Remember they are fighting so that we have the freedom that we sometimes take for granted, wrong or right it is what it is"?

I do believe that some were following orders and some are under such stress that they don't know which way to turn.

if the facts are true, those soldiers pulled an innocent man out of his house, shot him, and then planted an AK47 on him to make him look like an insurgent... this wouldn't be the first time something like that happened and regardless of what they are supposed to be doing or how much you support them, they are not gods and they cannont walk aropund deciding who should live and who should die...

true innocent people die accidentally in war, but from the sounds of this particular case, this was a flagrant violation of human rights and any sense of decency...

true it is a stressful situation, but we can win the war a lot easier if we also try to win the hearts of the people... and this kind of stuff certainly won't help

The problem comes when the soldiers do not follow the generally accepted rules of engagement. Shooting of unarmed, civilians (if it happened) is wrong and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Surviving is shooting the enemy who is shooting at you or is about to shoot at you. If someone gets in the way, then that is an accident and a casualty of war, if they are unarmed, you detain them not shoot them in the street.

I liked this answer from a previous questioner:

"American military personnel are held to a much higher standard than the personnel of virtually any other military organization in the world. Not only can they be Court Martialed for disobeying a lawful order, they can be Court Martialed for OBEYING an UNlawful order. "

The ones that are being prosecuted have committed crimes. It is one thing to do one's duty, but is another to torture or murder. When the gov't feels that someone has abused their power or status, they are prosecuted. We have several examples of some of our troops getting carried away in the moment. This leads them to committ crimes and I believe they SHOULD be made to answer for them. How else do we show the Iraqi's how a democracy should work? We can't let them get away with war crimes or practices that are against UN policies.

There's the Law of Armed Combat (LOAC), certain rules of engagement (basically saying you can't shoot non-combatants, children, holy sites, etc)

I agree with you completely, it's not fair that soldiers should get punished for breaking these stringent rules, especially in the heat of battle, as well as dealing with enemies who like to "cheat" (using child soldiers, using holy places as armories, etc.)
I guess we punish our own all in the name of maintaining some sort of moral standard to show ourselves better than our enemies.
In the end, I must agree with your sentiment in saying that it almost isn't worth it to play by the rules of the Geneva Convention when we're practically the only ones who take them seriously. I suppose even internationally, nice guys finish last.

Because Bush, Blair and all the others who actually issued the order to go to war are above the law as far as this is concerned. We all hope that, eventually, they'll be held to account just as Saddam is being now.

Do you know the particular details of this case? The man was taken out of his home , a 54 year old crippled man and they shot him in the face, and they took a gun out his neighbors house and planted it on him. Not to mention every one except for one as confessed that this was the truth
