im sick of it being used as an argument. we all know killing is wrong. the question in every abortion argument is "do unborn babies count?" and the phrase "thou shalt not kill" doesn't clear things up at all and the one about him knowing us since before we were in the womb, doesn't that also pertain to sperm and eggs? and if so isn't allowing a period to happen the same as allowing an unborn baby to die?

a sperm or an egg by themselves are not new life..new life comes about when the two come together....
In the Didache it clearly states that the killing of a child even before it is born is wrong....now if you do not follow Christian teaching this will men little to you..but within the the Christian commnity the idea that the unborn count goes back to the earliest days

It's psychological in that we have a hard time disconnecting unborn children from born children in our minds and it's biological in that we don't really know or understand when "life" begins.
However, when you enter Christianity into the picture, most conservatives will tell you that life begins at conception, and since we lack empirical evidence, they'll most likely present a Bible verse or just a "God-said-so" justification.
I agree with you though. As far as rational arguments go; we can barely differentiate between killing a sperm or egg and aborting a grossly under-developed joining of the two.
I think abortion is acceptable in context; partial-birth abortions don't sit right with me.

I PERSONALLY believe if the saying "thou shall not kill" should most definitly pertain to unborn infants. It is wrong to believe in the saying for one reason and then change your mind the next, if the thing is breathing and had a heartbeat it is alive and there is no reason why it should be killed. If this saying is meant for animals too then what makes it ok to make that exception for someone who has an unwanted pregnancy?? But allowing a period to happen is not killing, it is a process that must be done for health related reasons, so that is not the same thing.

My short and oversimplified answer is that I don't believe the soul enters the body until the first breath is drawn. It seems that the soul of the unborn is a huge talking point for some of the Christians on this site. However, it has been stated by them time and time again that the soul would go straight to Heaven, which is supposed to be a good thing...

I think the belief is that a soul is given once it is conceived (Sperm and egg merge become a zygote). Animals do not have a soul so it does not matter when they are killed. So how do we know that a zygote has a soul and a sperm and egg do not? We don't. It's a matter of belief. Biologically a zygote is as alive as a sperm and egg. It should also be noted that all the sperm that does not fuse with an ovum die.

Of course it pertains to unborn children. The Bible states that women who conceive, conceive children. Hmm....and even your statements betray the fact that you believe it is also alive. An unborn...baby. The only babies who exist who are also not alive are dead. Unborn babies are not dead, intrinsically. Interestingly, the argument can go both ways. But not about God. If there is a God, He is not for abortions. This is antithetical to Scripture and philosophy.

That is a good question. I guess animals do not have the ability to know right from wrong. Making them animals and not people.
The Bible refers to the action of killing knowing that is wrong. That is when the sin occurs. People kill animals in order to eat, to survive. Jesus himself feed others with fish. But when you kill for the sake of taking a life out of anger or as a way to escape from your wrong doings then you are committing a sin.
And egg alone is not a creature with a soul, nor is a sperm. But together they create an embryo with life in it. Taking that life is a sin...

PREACH ON!!!! I'm sick off all this abortion talk too!! If you dont like it than you dont have to do it!!! Its been the argument of the centuries. Unfortunately there are too many people worried about others...and they dont look at their own lives!!!! Just let people LIVE! If they have an abortion than they will have to deal with the consequences...thats it! And whats up with Christians burning down abortion clinics...that sounds like 911 "holy war" bombing!!!!!
We need to learn to just love each other...no matter what and get along!!!!!

Babies are human. Sperm and eggs are single cells, and they each carry half the chromosomes needed to make a person. Only fertilized eggs have the full set. That's why I believe a living entity begins at fertilization, or conception.

A sperm is not a baby, an egg is not a baby...it's when the sperm fertilizes the egg. And the thing about the animals...God made animals to be eaten...not our children.
