To me, thinking "outside the box" means:

When confronted with option A or B,
start looking for option C

Well thinking out of the box means to me that you are saying a lot of things that people don't want to hear due to the fact that it may just be true, or may offend someone that knows it is true, And thinking out of the box is most likely the most obvious thing to be thinking at the time. People may say that they haven't thought about the thing that the person thinking out of the box thinks but deep down you know they do. I also think that people who think out of the box are very deep thinkers. Only the shallow thinkers get confused when the deep thinkers begin to think. You can almost compare it to the statement Is the glass half empty or is the glass half full it is all in the way that you look at things.. If the glass is half empty then there is no more to think about if the glass is half full then you know that you still have a lot to think about. Then you think about the least obvious which then becomes the obvious..

To me, thinking outside the box means don't go for the obvious answer. Allow your mind to explore other possiblities.

I believe I am a free thinker. I have my own mind and it would be a waste not to use it!

Man.. I am a free thinker- but every single time I hear this phrase it's in some bs corporate pep rally where they say "Think Outside The Box" - really meaning..
Give us new ideas to make money- however- remember we don't look kindly on rebels..

So that phrase sorta irks me..

I consider myself a free thinker...but that's not only because I think past missionary. No...it's also because I'm creative and imaginative. : )

And might I just add, "Shame on "E E" for answering the subject line rather than the question."

I consider myself to be someone who thinks outside the box. I have worked for numerous large corporations who always attempt to enforce conformity and stifle free thinking, as they want a workforce of drones who mindlessly carry out the tasks they are set. I know this because I rose to be one of the managers. Eventually I took a risk and went out on my own. A year later I'm on top of the world. I've used my ideas to create a small but successful company in Australia (the country I always wanted to work in - I'm from Britain), I live in an apartment in one of the best areas in town and I take **** from no man.

Some people hate open mindedness. This is usually because of their fear of the unknown. I'm always suprised just how many people are content to be led through life, never pushing their own barriers and relying on their small self imposed comfort zones.

Thinking outside the box is for people that can't solve their problem in a normal way. They are then forced to create overly complicated and jack assy solutions, sometimes called "flexible solutions" to their crappy and gay problems. If everybody just thought inside the box more often they would waste less time and be more effective leaders.
