when people lay in bed with ones front to the others back, like spoons laying together in a drawer.

There are two main definitions:
Spooning is actually a very old expression, that started in the 1700's meaning to make love by caressing, kissing, and talking amorously. It comes from the Welsh custom of an engaged man's presenting his fiancee with an elaborately carved wooden spoon. It was made popular in this country in the early 1900's by the hit song "Harvest Moon" where the singer says there "Ain't no time to sit out doors and spoon".
In the last few decades it was changed to mean specifically laying like spoons, one person cupped inside the other. Where a couple will lie facing the same direction, cuddling, with his chest to her back.

The spoons position (also spoon position, spooning) is a popular sexual position. The name derives from the way that two spoons may be positioned side by side, with their bowls aligned.

It is also vastly popular to use this position (without penetration) simply for cuddling, as it provides close contact and shared body heat. The term spooning usually refers to this activity.

It's when a couple lays facing the same way and you "spoon" cuddle from behind.
Your bodies are positioned in the same manner.
There's no dry humping involved as mentioned above.
It's hugging/cuddling from behind. Usualy it's a non sexual way to get close to your partner and show affection while sleeping or watching TV
It can become sexual if you would like it to.

Are you serious? You don't know what "spooning" is? Well think silverware drawer. Picture in your minds eye, the spoons laying on top of each other - back to front, back to front. Now picture yourself lying with your significant other back to front, head to head, toe to toe. Got it?

Spooning is like cuddling! both partners facing the same direction snugglign up close, you can also have sex in that position, I luv it!
