I'm an army wife, and I think that AF would probably be better for a family man. The army (depending on MOS of course) has very long deployments, long hours, and a lot of time away from the family-- I've heard that it's not so much like this in the AF.
As far as I know, all branches deploy, and there are varying levels of danger in each job, in each branch. For people to automatically assume that one branch is more dangerous, more worthy, better... it's completely ridiculous and totally untrue. All of the military branches have a purpose, and I think that the various branches would fail if the other ones weren't there. Make sense?
The trash talking you hear is all pretty much good natured, from what I can tell-- almost like rival sports teams in a fun league. We have friends in all branches, and the trash talking that goes on between them is unbelievable sometimes, but it's all in fun. They know that they are working basically for the same employer and purpose, and would protect each other with their lives if need be.
Also, please make sure that you know exactly what you're getting into with the military. A lot of families thrive in this lifestyle, but the divorce rate is really high because of all of the stressors that civilian familes don't have. For example.. imagine deployment. You go to work one day, and come back a year or more later. You end up missing everything in that time, from births to deaths to anniversaries to holidays. It is very difficult, and requires a lot of adjustment on not only your part, but also from everyone in the family. If you can, talk to not only a recruiter, but also people who have served or are serving in the branches that you are considering. They can probably give you a good idea of what to realistically expect.
Make sure that you talk to your wife too. Even though she won't be the one signing the papers or receiving the paycheck, this decision will affect her greatly. There's a lot to think about with this... please take the time to make the decision for you and yours. Good luck!

The Air Force doesn't get as much respect becasue they live a better life than any other branch. If you ask me That is smart. Aerial Gunner is a fun job, you will probably get to blast some towel heads, and you will go home to your air contitioned tent everynight instead of living in a hole you dug yourself like some of teh Army guys do. When everyone is deployed though they all pretty much treat each other with respect, if they don't it is just because they didn't score high enough on the ASVAB to get into the Air Force. The Air Force rains fire from above for the freedom we love.

I spent 20 years in the Army as did my father. My daughter's husband is in the Air Force. Yes you will hear the put down's for any service, but they all have their jobs to do and they do them very well. Just remember that they are all hard on the families, the family or future family, must be prepared for sacrifices beyond anything they could think of. A frame of mine is more than they will need, they will need strength of character and stand behind each other. So you decide and thanks for even considering, going in the service for this great country.
By the way I am in the Middle East right now and the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines have living conditions that differ only slightly. Tents, Big Tents, Bigger Tents, tin building or bigger tin building. Civilian Contractors get the same. You also have your choice of sand and dirt or more sand and dirt! Hot shower or hotter shower. The families of these guys and gals have it better than the service member themselves, so any of the branches are equal. God Bless each and everyone !

Well i can tell you that the air force gets better family housing for the most part. If that is something you want then the AF is the way to go. Some places in the Army the housing is rather nice. But it all depends on what you are used to.
All in all it's still a free place to live.

You're perfect for the military recruitment machine. Seriously, President Bush commends guys with your kind of mental awareness and aversion to being overly brushed-up on current events, and the military will hope that you might know other guys with your same mind set that might like to join up on a buddy-system. Stand proud, you truly have a future in the new army. There's alot of good going on in Iraq and you can be a part of it.

When my husband was in the Army, he would come home telling me stories about Air Force people who were living on the same base as we were, but were getting sub-standard living pay for having to stay in quarters not good enough for the Air Force. They were the exact same quarters that we Army folks were staying in!!
I hear that the housing is better and I've always liked shopping in BX's (Air Force base exchange, store that has everything in it kinda like Wal-Mart). I'd go AF if I were you, for your family.

For a family man it's a matter of your family. IF you must serve your chances of getting back to your family are much better if you are in the Air Force. ALL military serve and deserve respect. If it was me, I would do the Navy, but I already did 20 there. You get great training and much better chance of seeing your family again.

I would have to say the air force is the better family choice. I've seen how they treat they're people compared to the army. So i would have to AF for sure.

confused here which one do you want whats best for your family or respect? If you want whats best for your family you need to look into housing, deployment rotations, and if your MOS will translate into the real world. Yes eventually everyone gets out. You may also want to find out what is offered on individual bases like education and who provides the college courses on base.
Me I was in the Marines and we had the worst barraks known to the us military. Base housing was in the same league as my ex brother in law who was in the air force though. Want respect and whats best for your family go into the AF and go PJ or CC.
