Economy is a cabin in the aircraft, has nothing to do with the length of the flight. A commercial flight from NY-LA takes about 4 hours

Flight time is unusual appromimately 5 Hours 30 Minutes to 6 Hours.
Do not forget about the time difference. California is 3 hours behind New York.
Example: Flight leaves 12:00 + 6:00 Flight Time = Arrives 3:00 California time.

You don't say which airports nor if you plan on getting a cheaper filght with a stop-over. So, I'll assume JFK and LAX, just for kicks. The shortest flights are essentially 5.5 - 6 hours - these have no layover. With a minimal layover, you are looking at 8-10 hours, with the layover time included.
Check out Orbitz.com - they list the actual flight times, layover times, and total travel times. It will allow you to get correct answers rather than terrible guesses from those who don't know.

Well. For PA-CA its about 5 1/2 - 6 hrs. And thats to like Sacremento.. LA is further south so i'd say somewhere around 6-7 hours? To get more accurate info though, you should go to different travel sites like Orbitz or Priceline and type in NY to LA and check how long it'd take.=)

Five and a half to six hours is right. The good news is that you'll arrive at the same time as the guys that paid big bucks for their first class seats, up front! :-) Good luck finding a real cheap fare!

Yes the 5.5 to 6.0 hours is about right. Usually it is a little quicker going East than West (i think that's right. Anyway, going one direction you have more of a head wind)
