You really have some nerve to tell other people what they are thinking or looking for by using a particular expression.

So when you say "oh, sh*t", does that mean you literally just crapped your pants? Or are you lokonig for advice and guidance from poo? "Oh god" is an expression just all the others. You wonder why people on here give christians a hard time, it's people like you who try to say "oh those atheists really WANT to have god's help, they just can't admit it".

It's in the vernacular now. It has nothing to do with religion anymore. The same thing goes for "Bless you" when someone sneezes.

Edit - I must point out, to all of you douchebags that seem to think being an atheist is the "cool" thing to be. WTF planet are you living on? Do you have any idea how UNPOPULAR it is to be an atheist? We are the most despised minority on the face of the earth. If you think it's a cowardly person that is not afraid to speak his mind, even though 85% of the ignorant human race will hate him for it, then you are truly insane.

I swear, how the f%ck do you people even know how to operate a damn computer?

They are mere utterances cuz deity cussing is very popular cuz christianity is so prevalent through our culture. No matter where we turn our heads, we see something that is christian in nature.

So since christianity is so glommed into our culture, we tend to take christianity's tenents and use it in our language, hence "goddam" and such the likes.

It has everything to do with CULTURE.

What of Japan and Shintoists? I am sure Shinto is prevalent in Japan, perhaps the non-Shintoists (which the Shintoists might call "unbelievers" too) say "OH SHINTO DAMN!"

Ever think if you are calling us unbelievers, we might think the same of you? You don't believe in what I believe....I can safely say you are a unbeliever. :-)

First of all, i'd like to thank you for allowing me to respond to this question:

in Islam, we believe that everyone is born on the instict of worshiping God alone. it's called Fitrah in arabic.

and only when the child grows up and is influenced by outside forces (such as parents, friends, surroundings, etc) are they changed in their beliefs and become Christian or Jewish, etc.

Secondly, with reguard to your Question, Allah Clearly gives this example in the Quran when He says:

Surah 31; 30-33

This is because Allah is the Truth, and that which they call upon besides Him is the falsehood, and that Allah is the High, the Great.

Do you not see that the ships run on in the sea by Allah's favor that He may show you of His signs? Most surely there are signs in this for every patient endurer, grateful one.

And when a wave like mountains covers them they call upon Allah, being sincere to Him in obedience, but when He brings them safe to the land, some of them follow the middle course; and none denies Our signs but every perfidious, ungrateful one.

so clearly, Allah tells us that even the disbelievers, when in need will call out to their Lord. that is why you will see atheism is such a minority in the world, because it goes against human instinct.

WAllahu Alem (and Allah knows best)

Because that "which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them...so that they are without excuse." (Romans 2:19-20)

What all this means is that God has soverignly planted evidence of His existence in the very nature of man by reason and moral law. GOD IS IN THEM, and although they do not confess Him as Lord, they do confess Him.

When someone says, "Oh, my God!" or "Jesus Christ" in a deragatory fashion, they innately know that doing so is against God: they are proving the Scripture, which says that "they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conciences bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them." (Romans 2:15) God has written His 10 Commandments upon the conscience (lit. "with knowledge") that we would have a sense of right and wrong that produces guilt when violated.

Using the name of God in vain is a violation of the 3rd Commandment of God's Law, which says, "You shall not use the name of the Lord your God in vain." When we use His name to express disgust, we are taking the name of the God who gave us life, and dragging it through the mud by using it as a filth word. Scripture defines sin as lawlessness (see 1 John 3:4, "sin is lawlessness"). So, by the 10 commandments (law), written on our hearts, we can know when we sin. Whenever we lie, we sin. Whenever we steal, we sin. When we lust, we sin. When we use God's name in vain, we sin. When we fail to love the Lord first, we sin. These are all violations of His commandments. Lawlessness is sin.

Thus, the reason why someone says the name of the Lord in vain is because they are a sinner. Most likely, they have not repented and put their trust in Jesus Christ for salvation.

Hope this makes sense!

It's kinda like a 5 year old who wonders off to the Wal-Mart toy section. Everything is sweet and fun in the toy section until they realize their parents aren't there and they get scared. That's when they yell for mom and dad.

It's funny, isn't it? Those expressions are just so ingrained in us and have become so commonplace, for many people they no longer have much meaning. I know I don't give it much thought when I use them.

Can you picture someone in the throes of passion screaming "Oh Goddess!" "Oh fate!" "Oh Mother Nature!" Too funny.

Because they are liars. They are not really unbelievers. They are too cowardly to admit they believe in God. They think someone will laugh at them and call them names. Poor babies!
