Well, weigh the risks.
Probability of him dumping you as a freind / how unhappy you would be if that happend < or > than probability of him wanting a relationship with you / how happy you would be then.
I know that's confusing, but I think the point is there. Just decide how happy you'd be if he went for it, and if it's worth the risk of how unhappy you'd be if he didn't want to talk to you anymore. It's risk management.
He SHOULD respect the guts it takes to risk the freindship. He'd think "wow, she likes me so much that she's willing to risk our entire friendship on being with me?"
Also, consider that odds are the relationship wouldn't work out anyway, and if it doesn't, then it would be pretty dificult to remain freinds after the break up.
ALSO, consider what you would regret more in the future. In two years, would you could look back and say "I wonder what would have happened if I asked him out", or you could say "I wish we were still freinds, why'd I have to go and ruin it by asking him out?"
Which of these two would you regret more?
Life is risk management. All you can do is make the best decisions for yourself, and be ready to face the consequences. My opinion is that you should ask him out, because looking back and saying "what if" is always a very hard thing to deal with. If he dumps you as a freind, then the freindship probably wasn't that strong to begin with.

Usually, it's always better to date your best friend than someone you don't know. That means, if he is "the best friend", and both of you know your secrets, than he should know this ONE. He will thank you for being open. You might give him some time, for him to realize that, what you are saying is what you want. If you understand each other, than everything should be right, and you won't regret it. Good luck!

You should tell him about your feelings toward him, you can't hide them and maybe he has feelings for you. You don't know. Just tell him you got to be honest with him after all he is your best friend.
Good luck...

I think you should tell him...becuase honestly if that ruins your friendship then I dont think you guys were that good of friends to begin with..and it also shows his maturity level as a person...you miss 100% of the shots you never take...remember that...and if you like him that much...then you should just tell him

I believe you'll change his hold out look on "love" when you tell him how you feel. Who knows, maybe he like you also, but is really shy. Go ahead, let him know how you feel, have no regrets in life. Good luck hun...=)

Just tell him you like him. You could just right him a letter if you want.
