it shows a mood or feeling. It can also describe how someone feels or looks at a certain point of their life. Its diffrent of each person.

if a group of eople are looking at the Pictre scream, a " Normal" person can say that its just someone being scared. but if a gothic or Emo person looks at it the can say that the picture describes how they imagine they feel like when their depressed

I'll try to kee it under 1,000, (especially since there is no actual photo in question)
a picture says
it's day time/night time
raining?shining
what season
who what when where
people's actions, facial expressions,
I just cut my grass!!
or I need to.
a picture truely says a thousand words,
and that's just to the first person that see's it!!
the next person will have a thousand more.....

Interestingly, pictures cannot depict some of the most important societal and organizational, even psychological principles, because they are static and cannot demonstrate sequence of events, or change. They are limited to surfaces. So the Kansas serial killer appears in a picture as a kind, well dressed church offical. To comprehend things, one needs longer series of data.

However, I am in agreement with you that society at large uses pictures, and is trained to do so. Why do people hoot loudly when
a goodlooking guest appears on a talk show ? Do we know anything about his/her mind ?

pictures can convey feelings that words cannot, for example one picture I will never forget is a couple standing in front of the ocean and looking out at it, they just lost their child ,who had drowned in the ocean, the feeling of loss, tragedy, unfairness, thoughts about the power of nature are feelings one can feel and these emotions are all communicated by a single photograph
