I've always wondered how common this is because both of my parents are right handed and my brother and I are left handed.

Yes, One out of my three children is left handed, and my husband and I are not. However, both grandfathers are left handed. I think there is a component of heredity, so you may have some fairly close relatives that are lefties as well.

I am not a parent, but I have a brother that is left-handed!! It's funny because my parents & I are right-handed! I once asked my mom why my brother was left-handed and she told me a story about my father when he was young!! My father used to be left-handed until he was 12...he fell of a horse and broke his left arm and had to learn to write with his right hand (& after the arm healed, he couldn't write with that hand anymore...weird, huh) and that is why he is right-handed today!! So technically both of my parents are not right-handed, but I always thought they were until a few years ago!!

Both my parents are right handed, and I'm left handed (although my sister is right handed). Another funny thing is that both my spouse and I are left handed, and it appears that our 15 month old son is going to be right handed! Go figure!

My husband and I are both right handed. Our son is left handed, our daughter is right handed. My father is left handed, my mother was right handed, but my mother's sister(my aunt) is left handed, but has all right handed kids. My brother and sister are also right handed, even though our father is left handed.

Now if you can make sense of what I just wrote......

My friend is one of 6 kids. Both her parents are right handed and so are all the kids except one of them.

My husband was "switched" (started out left-handed but was forced to write right-handed by his teachers) when he was in grade school but so far both of our kids are right-handed. My mom and dad are both right-handed and one of their four kids is left-handed.

My parents were both right handed.

Out of six kids, I am the only lefty of the bunch

My husband is right handed

Out of five kids, we have one lefty in the bunch.

No grandchildren yet ( i am waiting)

I am thinking its not a strong hereditory issue, like blood type, where you can figure out the possiblities using both parents types. Its just one of those things, like body build, just wait and see if one gets it or not.

It depends on the kids' orientation as he/she grows up and who the child is with most of the time. I should say that my kids are ambidextrous, they can use either hands skillfully as the other but I am training them to write by the right hand because it is right.
