Why do people just make up stuff if they don't actually know? Go to http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/tips/brochures/brochures_1229.html
for foreign entry requirements. It tells whether you need a visa and how to get one for every country. There are dozens all over the world that don't require visas of US citizens.

Most countries in Western Europe, the Philippines, Canada, Mexico and several countries in the Caribbean. These are only for limited visits. Best bet is to visit or contact the consulate or embassy for a country you want to visit to determine what the requirements are.

Almost all of them. Most countries will only require you to fill out a visitors card along with your passport. Mexico and Canada you probably only need an ID.
