I am throwing a surprise birthday for my boyfriend... my 3 year old is getting vocal about the details... like when we went to Michaels to get some stuff he told daddy... "we got you a surprise" he asked what is it... fabian said "oh, is-a door-rec-a-rations (decorations)" then he asked oh really for what, fabian and leaned in closer fabian said... "for your birthday" I felt like a failure... i tried to bribe my fabian but that didnt work he got chocolate and got to tell daddy... what do I do?

He's only THREE! you can't expect him to keep a secret - you either have to leave him out of the plans all together, or have a "so be it" attitude and roll with it!

Well most adults can not keep a secret that is a lot to put on a three year old.
Do not tell him anymore. They do not understand the concept at this age of not telling people things. You can buy stuff and not tell him why. Or even sneak stuff into the cart without him even noticing.

I can really empathize with you on this. For my last two pregnancies, my husband and I decided to keep it a secret for a little while because we wanted it to sink in with us (surprise pregnancies)...both times I told our kids NOT to tell anyone and within 24 hours of that conversation, they told my parents. It is impossible to keep children quiet especially when they are that young. Could you get your boyfriend a bogus present in front of your son and tell him that is the surprise? That way if it slips out the real surprise is still safe.

Don't tell him!! Young children don't understand the idea of surprise, so instead, tell him that you're buying a special surprise for someone else (who he rarely sees...or who you let in on the secret), or you're buying stuff to make a special picture for your living room wall. Then, if he tells your boyfriend, just dismiss it...."Oh, yeah...Aunt Viv wanted some special candles (even if you bought streamers). I saw them on sale this week..." Or play dumb (if you're a good actress), "I'm not sure *what* it is I said that he misunderstood!!"

Suggest he tell his secrets to a stuffed animal. It's hard for them to get the concept of a surprise party. I'm sure your BF will love the party either way.

Your 3 year old is just excited. So what if he tells. Just be happy that you were blessed with him. He just wants to be a part of whatever you do. Your boyfriend will appreciate it either way.
