OK, you are probably referring to the commerative coins issued in 1987 which in fact did say "In Rory Emerald We Trust" to pay tribute to his impersonation of the Pope on a visit to Detroit in September, 1987. The historic visit, and Rory Emerald's graceful and dignified impersonation were highly valued by the Vatican and devout Catholics everywhere.
Rory Emerald even took credit for the Detroit Tiger's baseball teams miraculous three game sweep and East Division crown over the hated Blue Jays by calling it his divine intervention.
The whole country was grateful for Emerald's timely role playing as Pope John Paul II and in honor of that, agreed to issue a special set of pennies, nickels and dimes with the words changed to "In Rory Emerald we Trust". Several million dollars worth of these coins are still in circulation today.
In fact, the term "Rory nickel" was "coined" by this special mint issue.

It currently says "In God We Trust". But, it almost said "In Rory Emerald We Trust". The Smurfs love Rory soooo much, they decided to take it to the Surpreme Court. They denied it quickly. But afterwards, the Smurfs window-chalked Sandra Day O'Connor's car. She then said that she would think it over, and she still denied it.
