For fun time together, darken the room and shine a flashlight on the floor, moving it slowly around on the floor and up the walls. The cat will try to catch it, including jumping up on the wall. Tho this is not a good idea if you have wallpapered walls :-)
If you sew - take some fabric scraps, some batting or fiber fill and catnip and make some small catnip toys. Size, shape, and whether the fabrics match won't matter to the cat. They LOVE catnip toys!
Paper wads are great too. I'd be careful with aluminum foil because if they chew on it much, they could break off small pieces and swallow them. It would cause GI tract problems.
Another toy my youngest cat goes wild with - Q-Tips. They're small, light weight and she can get her claws into the tip and flings them everywhere!

My cats LOVE those plastic rings that come off of milk containers. Most cats like them. Also they love the caps off of 20 ounce pop (soda) bottles. I have one cat who loves to play fetch with Q-Tips, just make sure your cat isnt trying to eat the cotton. Boxes that are big enough for cats to get into are also great, and paper grocery bags. I also have a long shoe string tacked securely in the middle of a door frame (not a room I use often) with a toy mouse tied to the end of the shoe string. I have it just high enough that my cats have to run and jump to catch the mouse. They do it for about 10 minutes then crash from all the energy they have to use to jump up so high. Just make sure you leave the door open lol.

This toy is not home made but will keep the cat entertained for as long as you can go. A lazer light. This is how some people can get their cats more active.

My 2 yr old kitty likes a scrunched up bit of paper that I throw and he fetches. Also a large sheet of newspaper keeps him amused for hiding time. If you have a smooth floor the lid from a jar doubles as a puck. His favourite playtime is watching water trickle toward the drain in a shower then he pounces.

My cats adored boxes, paper bags, plastic bags (must be supervised with those).
Maybe get a toilet paper roll, duct tape one side, put some lima beans or rice, inside, duct tape it shut. That will make noise, and most cats LOVE anything that makes noise.

Take a stick, preferably a pop sickle stick and glue feathers onto one side so it sticks out the top. Flutter it around their face, your can will love it. Or if you happen to have a small bell lying around, roll that across the room and watch' em go!

Crumple up some tin foil like a ball, they love it.
Let them play in a box....
Use a string to let them chase.....
hang the string from the table so they can play with it themselves

Drawstings and sashes from YOUR clothing is always good.
Paper balls (wadded up paper) are always favorites.
Yarn/string as long as you're playing with them with it -- but do NOT leave it out when they're unsupervised because they might eat it it can tie up their insides and be life threatening.
