Australia is an English speaking nation why is it so diff from UK ? I understand the USA is probably more multi-cultural therefore will have a wider variation on English

just like in us we all speak english but the south sounds diff from the north...midwest sounds diff.

Diff areas just have diff dilatacs and diff words for diff things.

I guess the accents come from the different origins of the people, and also from being separate - dialects probably diverge more when people have little contact with one another and don't hear other accents. In the days before TV and radio there was less chance of regional people having standardised accents like that of educated Londoners.
Australians might sound very different to you, but often Australians accents are confused with English or South African by people from other countries. This is presumably why Juliet Landau sounds Australian in "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" when she is playing the mad English vampire Drusilla.
