I cringe when I'm reading answers or questions here and words are misspelled and/or the grammar is so far off! ARGGHHH!!! It just drives me up the wall. Especially if it's intentional and they're typing the words how they use them in everyday conversation (i.e. using "dis and dat" for this and that). WHO TALKS LIKE THAT??? What happened to sounding/acting like a well-educated individual instead of a moronic idiot?
Anyone else have that pet peeve?

Please, no disrespect was intended towards those that do not use English as their first language (I only have questions from the USA displayed in my Answers), or black men or even towards teenagers.
As far as "dis & dat"...I don't care if you say them when you're speaking, but it bothers me in type.
So, apologies going out to those that I offended in any way. I'm certainly far from perfect and I'll be the first to admit that. I'm also not uptight ...as someone so eloquently stated. :-)
It's all good, baby...it's all good.

Yes. The problem is that it's difficult to sound well-educated when one isn't. Welcome to the pacification of America. First, we'll stop teaching English in the classroom, and replace it with self-esteem training. That way, when they can't speak or write cohesively, they won't feel so bad about it. No child gets left behind if none of them go anywhere...

i agree to disagree with you.
1. your right about the spelling and grammar of some of these answers and questions on here even when they have a spell check right there in front of them. I agree
2. as far as people using dis in substitute for this, dat for that, it's called Ebonics and every young or even old black person use it some how some way everyday some people call it broken English, i use it all the time i feel it distinguish use from the rest from the ordain, that doesn't mean I'm a moronic idiot as you so app to out it, or it doesn't mean i have a third class education for that sort cause i don't. I'm a black man that loves it culture and the language we decided to use instead of what you and the white man wants use to use, we gone say what we won't and do what we please cause were strong individuals and another thing we like to use the word ain't which is a real word cause it's in Webster so look it up

I too have pet peeves concerning proper grammar etc. But I have come to realize that this particular format is one where people from all over the world can post. For many of the postings done here English may be a second language or even a third. I only speak and write one language, although I know a little of several languages for speaking but nothing about writing in those languages. So maybe your peeve will be softened when you realize that these people are making a huge effort to post here in a language that is very very difficult to learn as a second language to speak let alone to read and write it. Every one should feel free to post their questions and answers here regardless of their education or lack thereof or their affinity with the English language. So perhaps it is best for those of us who do have peeves regarding the correctness of grammar and usage and even spelling to lighten up a bit and realize that it may be out of lack of knowledge of the language or even lack of education that causes a lot of this. Tolerance of most things is, while often difficult to exercise, generally the best thing for all of us.

Thank you! It's good to know that I'm not the only one sitting here at my desk and realizing that the majority of these people using the "dis or dat" phrases, are eventually going to run the free world.
My wife had a really funny joke in her email about how teaching has changed since the 1950's, in order to dumb down the education system in order to pass more kids through.
Usually you tell your kids to look up to the real heroes in life, like teachers and doctors, and try to teach them to aspire to be like the real difference makers instead of movie stars or sports figures. Unfortunately today's generation gets to look up to probably the worst figurehead our country has ever seen.

Well, it bothers me too, because it shouts ignorance and lack of education. But each generation comes up with their own slang - like valley talk of the 80's (gag me with a spoon!) which I am sure drove their predecessors crazy.
This just happens to be more than just terminology, but a complete lack of respect or use of the rules of grammar. These folks are going to find it difficult in college and beyond when their speech and grammar patterns are no longer acceptable.
And if it really bugs you, don't validate their behavior by responding to their questions.

I completely agree!! It makes you wonder who would take advice from those people. I mean, if you are asking a serious question and someone writes back telling you what to do, and they can't even spell the directions correctly, how are you supposed to believe that they really know that the what they're talking about??

I think there is something wrong with this, it should spell check your words automatically so your sentences make sense.
I don't think you should be angry about other people's grammar because there are people from all over the world asking and answering questions.. that's whats cool about this place
I'm from Mexico by the way

Its because children these days lack the motivation to learn. All they want to do is go shopping, play video games, worry about having boyfriends and girlfriends ETC. Schooling doesn't matter any longer, and as a result, they think it's cool and fun to spell like morons.

I'm with you 100%! Spell check isn't that tough, it's right at the top of the window! Grammar can be more difficult because some people just don't know how to write. I'm being grammatically correct, right? ;)

It is highly irritating, especially that there is the spell check option before you post your question or the answer.
I find it that people just don't care or can't be bothered by being grammatically correct.
As to misspellings - poor education and low IQ?

I have told about 20 people to use the spell checker, today alone. I hate it when people can't spell. I have a heavy Boston accent, but I don't type or write using it. Other people shouldn't do that either. I agree.
