I'd combine the themes. Have a Spongebob-dinosaur birthday party. Older boys still like dinosaurs. My son's 9 & also likes dragons. On the cake, have a t-rex in one corner & Spongebob in the other. Use both plates, Spongebob big ones, dinosaur small ones or vice versa. Use both paper cups. Remember, the party's mostly for you still. Keep it small & don't over do things.

I would go with fancy naive dinosaurs. Spongebob would be recognizable but actually watching it could be too overwhelming and sometimes scary for two year's old. There's a fair chance some children have already been scared by Spongebob....

Neither!
This is the perfect opportunity to mold him
and cultivate Courage & Peaceableness~
The Lion & Lamb "together" in harmony with
the antics & personality of a 2yr old...
Dino & SB can be fun, but secondary ...
You want all the best for your son ?
Consider:
Would Angels feel at home with SpongeBob?

Party City usually has sections of the store filled with themed paper plates and napkins and stuff (Cars, Pirates, Spongebob, etc). You should probably serve burgers and call them Krabby Patties =) I think some company even makes little gummy candy Krabby Patties, for goody bags. You could put plastic starfish and sponges and crabs and squid and shells all over the fishing net, if you wanted. Maybe you could hang some octopuses (plushy, inflatable? whatever you might find) from the ceiling. Blue and clear balloons might look like bubbles. For games, you could try doing carnival-type games (but not rip-offs) like throwing little darts at balloons ("pop the bubbles"). Also, a fun one for little kids might be bowling! They sell those plastic pins and balls so it's easier for them. Then just decorate the pins to be a bit more watery-like with blue and shells and stuff. Good luck!

Dinosaurs are cute for boys until around 7 when they outgrow them... Spongebob is universal, everyone loves him, from 1 to 101, you just can't go wrong!!!
But do the dinos now since he'll outgrow them before he outgrows SBSP.

I say dinosaurs.... but I hate Spongebob, so it's kind of a biased opinion!
