According to the U.S. EPA, cadmium was suspected of being a potential health risk in 1986. There is a wealth of information on the U.S. EPA Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) website at http://www.epa.gov/iris/subst/0141.htm.

Cadmium was first discovered in 1817. It came from an impurity in Zinc Carbonate. Almost all Cadmium occurs in small quantities associated with zinc ores. Current prices on Cadmium are $12.00 per pound. The main sources of Cadmium in the air are the burning of fossil fuels and the incineration of municipal waste. The short term effect of Cadmium is mostly in the lungs. Chronic exposure to Cadmium leads to a build up of Cadmium in the kidneys that can cause kidney disease. It is possible to develop lung cancer form long time exposure to Cadmium. The effects of Cadmium had been know for years before anything was done to protect the workers. In fact the bad health effects were known for a very long time here where i live at the Zinc Smelter here in Trail, BC, Canada where i worked. The company tried to hide the ill effects of working with cadmium here for many years until it got to a point where a great many workers were falling ill. This is one of the reasons that i quit the company. Today the company is known as Teck Cominco, Trail Operations. If you want more info please contact me at>> dcprice1@shaw.ca Thanks.
