i agree with the other posts, dogs find out info on each other this way. As far as deteriants a simple no while pulling the dog back by his leash, as all dogs sniff each other i doubt this will break the habit... but will at least teach him to quite sniffing/ and stop for that individual situation. Pugs having flat faces do not have as many smell receptors as average long muzzled dogs, of course they can not smell as well as other breeds, pugs were not bred to be tracking animals. lol. As reply to other post smacking a pug on its nose would require smacking its whole face, not a recommended dog training method. Dogs can understand more of the human language if properly trained to understand commands than we will ever learn about what differant "sounds" they make. This i think makes them smarter than us at times. lol

He's just trying to get information on the other dog fast. The fastest way for a dog to get information about another dog is by sniffing the other dogs behind. That in mind, your dog is very small and could be in danger, because the way that a dog tells another dog that that isn't okay is for the sniffed dog to nip at the sniffer.
I would keep your dog on a long leash (as opposed to a short leash because a short leash can cause tension for the dogs when greeting each other), and let the other dog make the first move. Having a bit of control is the best way to prevent it, and using a long leash should keep your pug from acting out.

Pugs are not the keenest of smellers when it comes to dog breeds. They don't have much of a snout and what they do have usually has some level of scent obstruction due to the peek face and sinus inteferences. That's why he is pressing his face up there and taking forever to get a good whiff.
As far as why they sniff the butt.....because of anal glands. Dogs have 2 internal sacs below their anal...they're called anal glands or anal sacs. They hold a stinky fecal secretion also known as a scent fluid (anal fluid). Each dog has his own signature scent, but if you were to ask me...they all smell like rotten tuna fish. That's what your dog is trying to smell.
I had a pug. He used to press his face tight on everything to get a good smell....besides butts....his toys, food, the ground....etc. It's just a pug thing.

Sorry dear, but that made me LMAO! Sounds like your puggie is *very* friendly. Dogs sniffing each other is like people shaking hands, so yes, it is normal... perhaps your little man can't smell as well as he should and needs to get a little closer than normal...maybe he's just a little bit of a doggie freak? Who knows. I would just do your best to correct his behavior to what you would like him to do. Find a keyword you can use for that specific action and use it while correcting him. It may take time, but I'm sure you can steer him in the right direction. Good Luck!

Well, a pug's nose is not like regular dogs. Its all smushed into their face, so in order for them to sniff another dog's butt, it has to get right in there.
It is their nature, that is what dogs do. If you don't like him doing that, just stop his encounters with other dogs. It is your pug's instinct, you can't punish him for being himself.
Also, he may be having some allergy or sinus problems, which makes its hard for him to sniff, which may be why he puts his nose all the way up in there. Take him to your vet to check up on that.

Your dog's sense of smell is 100 times greater than a human's. Pugs, have a shorter olefactory canal than larger snouted dogs. When dog's "sniff" each other, they're registering a scent into their memory, so that they can recognise each other's scent when they find it on the ground or a tree, or whatever. If you keep him on a leash, and just yell NO when he starts to do that, he'll stop eventually, but you have to do your part!

Maybe he has a less senstive sense of smell than other dogs and needs to get 'close and personal' in order to smell anything.
There's really nothing you can do except make sure he knows it's not acceptable behavior. So when he does it, growl at him. I know that sounds weird, but dogs don't understand our words, so we have to convey meaning through our tone of voice. Growling from you, who he sees as leader of the pack, will get the idea across that his behavior isn't acceptable. I don't recommend smacking him on the nose, but I know some people who do.

It is not gross in the least to a mongrel of any type!
Apparently, that is of the greatest importance to them!
Exactly the same as two civilised humans having a go at a jolly good conversation!
Cheers!
