First, I believe that "Art" is anything which when produced and displayed, envokes thought!. That being said, I believe photography is both an art and a science. How can something be both? Well, there is the technical aspects of mastering the camera, film, developing and printing. All of these are necessary at the "mastery level" to be able to produce something of "accepted quality." You typically don't see 2nd or 3rd rate work being considered as an artpiece. So the science of technical mastery is a must first.

Second, you must have "an eye" or "the feel" for structure and composition in order to produce something which is pleasing to the eye. Just as a portrait with the head cut off or a landscape which is off balance is generally not "pleasing" to look at, you must learn what is good structure and composition and must come to know it almost instinctively to produce quality photographic art. I has to "reach out and grab you" the moment a person looks at it and make them stay and linger over the image for a while, otherwise, it is nothing more than a historical representation of something, without interest, no invocation of thought.

Many folks consider B&W photography to be MORE of an art form than color photography because of the ability to abstract the color out of the image, reducing it to neutral tones of greys, nearly blacks and nearly whites. The ability to preceive how an image will look when devoid of color is a key ability which, usually only comes with experience. Color, for the most part, does not permit as much manipulation, at least in the exposure and film development stages. This is changing drastically for color with the onset of quality digital photography and applications such as Photoshop.

That's my 2 cents.....

Yes, photography is a type of art. If you go to art hosting sites like DeviantArt, you'll see that photography is a category.

What is art? If you look at Wikipedia, writing, poetry, dancing, and even acting (Performing Arts) is counted as art. Also according to Wikipedia, art is something created to send a message, mood, or symbolism for the observer.

For example, when people take a photo of themselves smiling, it can be counted as art because it sends off the emotion of happiness.

Photography is Art, and I have a great definition you can't go wrong with:

Art is the product of any concept manifested in existence. Therefore, music, painting, writing, drawing, etc. is Art.
To tell whether something is either good or bad Art, one must account the intention of piece and the effectiveness toward that end. Anyone can claim to be an Artist, but only proper training or sheer talent can make a great Artist. It's just like anyone can claim to be a Dentist-- anyone can shove metal tools into anther's mouth, but only proper training or skill can make a good Dentist.

Art is anything that comes from the mind's creative side, including music, dance, film making, photography and painting.

Not all photography is art just as not all painting is art.

The definition of Art as provided by Wikipedia:
By its original and broadest definition, art (from the Latin ars, meaning "skill" or "craft") is the product or process of the effective application of a body of knowledge, most often using a set of skills; this meaning is preserved in such phrases as "liberal arts" and "martial arts". However, in the modern use of the word, which rose to prominence during the Renaissance, art is commonly understood to be the process or result of making material works (or artwork) which, from concept to creation, adhere to the "creative impulse"—that is, art is distinguished from other works by being in large part unprompted by necessity, by biological drive, or by any undisciplined pursuit of recreation.

So yes, photography is an art. Anything using the creative process can be concidered an art. Whether you approve or disapprove, like or dislike....

of course. you can't just take a picture, and call it photography. you have to see and feel the image which is being photographed. it has to mean something to you.
I think art is a form of expression. just like music is art. i love both, and consider both to be art. ( don't know if i was any help.) :)
