These days it's really hard to do that ! 90% of cars there are some kind of hidden problem that is not noticiable to the new owner until they drive and run it for a wk or so! So you just have to take chances on buying one!
1 way to possiable find a reliable car is to look in the Obitcharies and go from there!

car fax is a waste of $, so much in the real world dosent make it on there and so much of the information isnt recorded properly that it isnt a reliable source. find a car, test drive it, take it to a reliable independent mechanic and ask them.

Go to the used lot of a new car dealer if you can afford it.Most cars bought from used car ads or from small car lots tend to need a lot of work in no time.The trade ins at the new car dealer are always in better shape and have at least some warranty.

buy a car from carmax. they check their cars thoroughly. if the car breaks don't worry you got a 3year/36000 mile warranty
