First, find out the local vendors you can purchase the countertops from then go to them and tell them you need a ring of sample tops you can add to your portfolio for clients. Lowes and Home Depot sell mostly to individuals, and they charge $1+ for each sample. My dad builds' custom cabinets and gets his sample rings from the people he buys to tops from. If you contact Mfrs, they may sell you their entire line but not all of them will be available locally.

I'd go directly to the manufacturers,,,IE: Corian. etc.

Explain first in an introductory inquiry, your situation and status, ask for any and all info they are willing to offer,,,even ask, if it's feasable to visit a plant that actually proiduces the material.

Certainly you can get vague info from HD/Lowes, etc, but they only sell a product that is sub contracted out for installation,,,no offense to either.... I spend a large majority of my time at both.

That applies,,,,the above answer,,, to ANY counter surface manufacturer, IE: Granite, Marble, Wood, Formica.

One obstacle might be that you have to BUY a sample portfolio, and not be a direct competitor, but as a designer, your best show is in samples, not chat. EX: My best reference in finding the best steak in town, is to sample it, not just take some ones word for a particular steak house.

Start with the granite industry, generally the vendors who supply granite companies sell a range of all sorts of countertop surfaces. Daltile is an excellent way to start researching, and they have good customer service. www.daltile.com

Contact the manufacturers, such as Wilsonart, Corian, Silestone, etc. and tell them you need sample packets for customers.
