get busy doing something that takes a lot of concentration which distracts you from your obsessive thoughts. Simply focusing on your breathing, the air flowing in and out of your nose, can be a distraction. If you can tolerate being around other people, get involved in an activity or conversation which draws your focus outside yourself.

If you are referring to obsessive thoughts of your close college buddy, its probably because you have unresolved issues with this person and it needs to be dealt with. It is your unconscious mind reminding you so you might want to contact her in some way if that is possible. If not, it is also good to send her positive loving thoughts containing good remembrances of why you were close and wishing her well. You will feel better for trying your best to put closure to your situation and the obsessive thoughts may stop or lessen. It NEVER hurts to send loving energies out to others even if just by thoughts.

You could consider counseling. You could also consider journaling about the thought. When you have the thought, start writing about the thought and how it makes you feel. Don't think about it. Just write and write. After some time you could likely notice some themes about it. Talk about what was going on when the thought happened. Maybe you'll notice something that triggers the thought. For example, if every time you eat potato chips, you have the thought, maybe you should lay off the potato chips.
