1/what's the meaning of "standing" in "standing 8 count"? Does it mean that the boxer is being given 8 count may still be able to stand, or get up again, not down on canvas? 2/What's the meaning of "mandatory 8 count"? Does it mean that the boxer is forced given a 8 count, though he shows he is OK and can fight right away?

tks

When a fighter gets knocked down he has a 10 count to get back to his feet and show the referee he's okay to continue. Even if he's back on his feet and ready right away, the referee has to keep counting until 8 before he can let the fight continue. That's the mandatory 8 count.

However, sometime's a fighter is badly hurt but isn't knocked down and the referee doesn't want to wait to see if he does get knocked down. Instead, he breaks the fighters and it is counted on the scorecards as a knockdown. The referee gives the fighter (who is still standing) a standing 8 count to show that he is okay and can continue. If he's out on his feet, the referee can stop the fight.

The standing 8 count is no longer in practice, though. If you're watching boxing on tv, it's usually specified at the beginning of the fight that there is no standing 8 count.

It's exactly what it sounds like. If a fighter gets knocked down and gets back up, a ref will give him a standing 8 count, checking his signs to see if he's still able to fight. After that 8 seconds, if the ref decides he's okay to continue, then the fight goes on.

The standing 8 count is no longer permitted by the Unified Rules, adopted by most states for pro boxing. However, it is still in effect for non-title bouts in a very small number of states.

The use of the standing 8 count is REQUIRED in amateur bouts.

standing 8 count means he hasn't been dropped but he is taking enough punishment that the ref just wants to make sure he is okay.

It gives a referee breathing space to make a considered decision on the condition. I am all for the boxer to be stopped too early than too late.

means the boxer is standing up, but dazed & the ref's not sure if he should go on so he gives him a standing count
