You'll need to invest in an electric razor, so I'm not sure you'll be saving that much - and by doing it yourself, it can take a while. If you already have the razor, you might save a bit of $ - but the last time we shaved our medium sized dog, it took 2 of us over 3 hrs to finish! Personally, I think it's worth the $ to take him to the groomers, however if you still want to give it a go, I found the easiest way was to perch the dog on a picnic table outside (like on a balcony or patio) and shave from there. You won't be bending as much so your back won't hurt as bad the next day. Good luck! Be sure to take a picture when you're done! It will likely serve as a reminder as to why you pay the groomer!

Stop! Grooming a dog is no small or easy task. There's a reason professional pet groomers exist. Call a couple and book an appointment. Try to find a Groomer who is a registered member of the National Dog Groomers Association. Speaking from experience it really is the best most cost effective way to go.

You can buy a dog groom kit - it's just like a hair clipper kit for men.
The hardest bit is getting the dog to keep still - especially if they're not use to the sound of the clippers.
It all depends on the type of dog as well though. I have a Spollie (collie/spaniel) and her hair just tends to fall out (alot!). I occasionally get teh scissors out to trim her tail etc but that's all. When we had a Family Westie, I use to trim her all over but she hated the clippers and so we had to use scissors - strangely though, the doggy hair cut place always seemed to manage clipping her!
WARNING - my doggy hair cutting was never as nice as the proper hair dresser and I'm sure my dog sometimes sulks after I've been chopping away at her.

depends on the breed of dog. I'd invest in some clippers, you can get some cheap ones from suppliers that run quietly and clip the dog. If its a terrier you might want to hand strip, which means putting the hair between finger and thumb and a quick yank pulls out old hair. Takes time but worth it. Otherwise get some good scissors!

i comprehend that's no longer what you needed to pay attention, yet I gave up on the electrical powered clippers and now cut back my hyper dogs's hair myself with scissors. he's not a instruct dogs so perfection isn't needed. I run my hand alongside him against the way the hair grows and something that stands up above my hands gets clipped (think of roughly how a hairdresser holds your hair between her hands and clips).

first of all good wash, then get your doggy brush or an old one you won't wash to brush through it. The local animal shelter use old hair trimmer you know the one the barbers use on men. If you don't have one I would recommend buying one, they are not expensive but if you have no money at presant get a scissors. Just give a generous trim the whole way around the dog. (cutting out knots rather than brushing painfully through them). The area to be careful with if you use a scissors is around the ears, you dont want to cut them. (extra tip, cooled boiled water and cotton wool to clean weepy eyes or ears, though away each piece after one wipe). Thats all you need to know, I do this and my dogs are beautious!!!!

Start by playing a recording of a clock ticking. That will remind your dog of when he was a puppy and so will begin drifting off to sleep. Hide behind something, but watch him carefully, and just as he is about to close his eyes, leap out with a cry of "Aiiieeeeeee!!! The Vet has come to take your dangle berries!!!"
This will startle your dog, and you can take advantage of this by saying "I will save your dangle berries from the vet but, I need to cut your hair off so he cannot recognise you.".and while all his fur is standing on end you should be able to get all of his hair with a beard trimmer.

Either go to library or bookstore and get a dog grooming book.
Or, go to petstore and buy a clipper set (many have CDs on how to clip your dog).
Have a groomer show you and then you'll be good-to-go next time!

use a pair of clippers and a comb. you can buy a hair cutting kit that contains everything in it from wal-mart. they may even have some made just for animals. my mom does this to her dogs and usually comes out looking pretty decent.

What type of dog do you have? Will your dog sit still while you groom it? The best type of clippers to have are the clippers they use to trim Horses. The 19$ kind suck!!!
