Yes, I have been guilty of this. I once emailed my professor about my grades and basically told her that discussions were pointless. I'm not proud of what I did.

Oh, yes, I most definitely apologized. Wrote her the longest apology letter ever in the history of apology letters.

Just wondering if anyone else had similar experiences...

Sometimes... I think that we are more open when chatting or emailing... I think this is due to the fact that we are not in front of the person. I find that I do my best discussions with friends on the internet. Because I can be really candid about what we are discussing.

Although, telling your professor that discussions were pointless may have offended her, but it may have helped her as well. Who knows, she may make changes to her topics to discuss. I wouldn't feel bad unless she confronts you about it.

Talking to people online seems less than real to me a lot of the time. There is definitely a buffer, and it can be easy to forget that there is another person at the other end of that connection. I know there have been times where I've been much bolder online than I would ever be in person. You could always do the apology thing if you feel bad about it. It sux doing it, but your professor will respect you more if you do.

Yes, the Internet lends an unfortunate anonyminity that basically represents people in their text and little else. Unfortunately, this also encourages many people to be complete douchebags on teh intrawebs.

Yes, I often say things I would never say in person - especially when it comes to being rude. I'm not proud of it either.

*Are* you sure you are talking to another human being?

Are you certain *i* am human?

All you see are pixels on a screen.

Are you *sure* you know who - or what - is on the other end?

Think about that for a while.

Then come back and tell "us" (if we really are who you think we are) your findings and conclusions.
