Something sweet usually eaten at the end of a meal.....but if it's something really good, I may eat it at the beginning of the meal :-)

Wikipedia says it is a food course served after a meal, usually something sweet. So have your chips and eat them , too. LOL. Marie Antoinette did say "let them eat chips"!
Buy that new candy that's shaped like Pringles. Maybe you could market the first dessert chips. Chocolate covered, caramel, banana...

Dessert just brings to mind the idea of sugar-- so, yeah, I'm claiming it's gotta be sweet. My mom was a bit of a health nut, though, and the kids in my fam would ask for dessert and she'd be like, "How about some applesauce?"
We'd be like, "..."
But I had some applesauce the other day and the $h!t was tasty, so big ups to moms. Sorry I never took you up on that $h!t.

No, definitely something sweet. Chips would be a part of the meal.

NO!
It must be sweet.
And with good etiquite, it is the largest portion of the meal!
Also, it is not impolite to serve dessert first, so forget that "last course of the meal nonsense.)
(MMMMM, Dessert!)
