Some religions just have different gods and goddesses instead of having one. The different gods and goddesses are sometimes the equivalent to saints.

But as far as saints as the Western world knows them, only the Catholic church has the power to make people saints.

Yes, all Judaic religions (Jews, Christians, Islam) make saints. Also, most religions recognize the positive contribution of a few!

I'm sure they can call anyone they want a saint but actually canonizing someone and having it accepted by the Catholic Church, that's another story.

Why would they want to? Sainthood is just a recognition of a reality....that spirit is still active in the world and is granted powers to help humanity...not by the church but by God. They are named by the church as "saints" to acknowledge their active role.
