I am going to New Orleans next month (July) and I'm curious as to what bars I absolutely "have" to vist while I'm there. Also, curious as to what the best places to eat are.

I lived in New Orleans and worked in Bourbon Street for 4 years and these are some of my favorite places

Bars:

Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, A piano bar that's very unique and romantic. Has a garden outside and magical ambiance.

Pat O'Briens, has a wonderful courtyard with flaming fountain. Very famous for it's Hurricane drink. A must see place in NO.

Napoleon House

Dinner:
NOLA, Emeril's Restaurant in French Quarter
Muriel's at Jackson Square in French Quarter

Breakfast/Lunch:
Port of Call, for delicious homemade hamburger and great drinks.
Maspero's on Decatur Street, French Quarter. Very inexpensive Cajun-Creole-Seafood restaurant with delicious sandwiches, my favorite was roast beef with melted cheese.

Don't forget to sit at Cafe Du Monde in the morning or late afternoon to sip Cafe Au Lait and a bite of Beignet while watching the street performers at Jackson Square.

As a resident of new orleans, I never go to bourbon street. I can tell you two areas that are much more fun.

1. Frenchmen street in the farbourg marigny (neighborhood just east of the french quarter). There are several awesome bars on frenchmen near the river with awesome music, especially Snug Harbor - some of the best jazz in the city. d.b.a. and the blue nile are also pretty cool. Check out this link for more info: http://wikitravel.org/en/New_Orleans/Faubourg_Marigny

2. Magazine street between Louisiana & Washington Ave has some great bars & restaurants. Rocky's pizza has some of the best pizza in the city, and they have 2 for 1 pizza on tuesdays. I love to hang out at the Bulldog or the Balcony Bar. There are also other great dives around there, like F&Ms, Fat Harry's, and Dos Hefes.

If you love to dance, one place I do like in the quarter is the Gold Mine on the corner of dauphine & st. peter st. It may look like a dump, but they play the best music - a nice mix of hip-hop, dance, and 80s music.

Some of my favorite upscale restaurants are the court of two sisters, ralph's on the park, K-pauls, Galatoire's, and NOLA. Unfortunately, Commander's Palace is closed, but it's reopening after their renovations in the fall.

Make sure you are 21. Theyre VERY strict about the ages.

Cats Meow is a fun, fun karoake bar on Bourbon.

Pat O'Brien is also great.

The Morgue (I did not see it last week when I was there, but it was a cool place)

Mulates for food, Ive heard Court of Two Sisters is good.

If you need any NO's info feel free to email me.

Maggie, has some good suggestions, but I agree with jgardn, I rarely go to the quarter. But then again, I usually go to a bar to drink, not because someone says it's a "must see".

One word of advice, since you're definitely gonna go to Pat O's, don't drink too many hurricanes. If you have more than 2, you will be drunk. If you make it to 4, you will throw up.
