Find out first if they like single malt or blended. There is a big difference.

Single malt - Glenlevit or Dewars
Blended - Chivas Regal

My choice - Glenfeddich

Try another gift, a true scotch conniseuer (sp?) will know all of the cheap common scotches both single malt and blended. If you must, go with age...older the better....or rariety...or even choices of wood, as Scotland does no restrict whether blenders use old bourbon (bourbon oak casks can only be used once, by law, and are commonly sold to tequila, scotch, cognac, and other distillers), sherry, port, cognac or other woods and the flavors they can impart can be very different. Further antagonizing the gift giving with be whether they like islay, highland, lowland, speyside, etc. Scotch is complicated, go with a nice jerry garcia tie or tommy bahama shirt.

Some of the best are Glenlivet, Dewars, Johnny Walker Red or Black. I am not a Scotch drinker but used to bartend and those were common favorites.

then probably a single malt...my favorite is MacAllan (sp, never read the bottle!). It is a medium body that has been aged in casks once used for sherry so it has a very slight nutty sweetness. My favorite blend is Famous Grouse. I first had it in Glasgow and thought it was a single malt.

If you actually find one at a reasonabe price, let us know....I've never seen or been able to associate high quality liquor with the words "reasonable price." But I suppose there is always a first...=)
