I'm traveling from Providence RI, to Newark NJ, then on to Manchester UK. I'm trying to find a way to upgrade to first class that won't cost as much as my airline ticket. Any tips?

I've already purchased my ticket, I'm just looking for upgrades.

Unless you have a lot of frequent flier miles already, you're going to have a tough time. You may be able to do an "at the gate" upgrade, where you pay a fee ($25-500 depending on the length of the flight) to upgrade your coach seat to first class; you ask for this option when you report to the airport and can't book it in advance. That's because the airlines only offer this choice when frequent-fliers and full-fare passengers did not buy up all of the first class seats. So they sell off the extras. If there's an extra, you may be able to upgrade.

You're going to have a much bigger chance of doing this on your RI to NJ flight than your NJ to UK flight, as lots of frequent travellers stockpile their miles and use them for the long Transatlantic flights. I've never seen a single empty seat in First Class on an International flight, and I've never been able to upgrade myself even though I'm a frequent flyer--- all the people with higher status than me had already reserved the first class seats.

It's still worth asking at the airport--- just don't get your hopes up!

It will probably be pretty hard to get an upgrade on the Transatlantic part of your flight...they are very expensive and most airlines sell them up until the time of departure. Then...they may upgrade any of their higher tiered frequent fliers, BEFORE they offer up the seats for anyone else.
I always tell my passengers it cant hurt to ask.The worst you can get is a no.
Good Luck...I fly in and out of MAN often to visit my fiance and its one of my favorite airports.

www.vacationstogo.com, www.orbitz.com, www.hotwire.com, and any of those others. Or just call the airline and see if you can be upgraded from your current ticket seat. I'm not sure from there, but just do research and ask. The worst thing that could happen is you keep your current place.
