When you use the green screen the computer defines anthing with that color as what it cuts out or superimposes the new footage or computer graphic immage on. Weather Men used to use blue screens and if they wore blue the immage would superimpose on them.

Green screen works by an effet called masking. After all the filming is done, the green (used to be blue) is edited out. Filmmakers basically go in frame by frame; cut out that one color, and put the remaining stuff on top of a seperate background "movie". Of course, computers have automated the process quite a bit.
You can do it in a home setting, but it'd be expensive. You'll want to get specialized software and a digital camcorder; and use a unique shade that isn't used in any of the costumes or foreground scenery.
