They work because they tap the creative visualization skills of our own minds, which we all have. I wouldn't advise casting spells that interfer with other's free will though because what goes around truly comes around. You are basically telling the universe it's okay if someone does that to you back.

I think there are some that are legit but there are more that are scammers and cold readers. There are many things in this world that we know nothing about. I'm sure that it's possible.
