Steps:
1. Pour a small amount of baby oil onto your hands and apply to tangles.
2. Rub thoroughly throughout the tangle to distribute the oil.
3. Run a comb through the hair, pulling gently through the knots.
4. Shampoo to clean out oil.
It's easier to brush dry hair.
Also, there are some product on the market that help. My favorite was Johnson & Johnson's No More Tangles.

It depends on the kind of hair you have.
I have very fine long hair that tangles easily. I know that you're not supposed to comb it when it's wet, but I lose much more hair when I comb through the snarls when its dry.
You could try washing your hair, put tons of conditioner in it, get a smooth large tooth comb or pick and work through the tangles with the conditioner still in it.
Best of luck!

One thing that I have found that really helps is while I am in the shower and have conditioner in my hair I comb through it. It usually takes a while, but if you do it again after you rinse the conditioner out ( while you are still in the shower) it usually helps.
