Our upstairs smoke detector went off a bit ago and there was no sign of smoke, so I shut it off, then ten or twenty minutes later out downstairs one went off and again no sign of smoke. Keep in mind they are older ones. So what could it be?

There's the possible chance the batteries of just been changed

Change the batteries.

All smoke detectors have batteries...your batteries are warning you they need changing.

There is a little metal cage inside, probably clogged with dust. Take the vacuum to it and clean it out.
