A hunter met two shepherds, one of them had three pieces of bread and the other, five pieces. All the pieces of bread were the same size. The three men agreed to share the eight pieces equally between them. After they had eaten, the hunter gave the shepherds eight bronze coins as payment for his meal. How should the two shepherds fairly divide this money?

i think they should share it depending on how much each shepherd's share the hunter ate.

the one with three loaves naturally ate 2 and 2/3 of his share, leaving the hunter with just 1/3 of a loaf.

the shepherd with 5 loaves, who also ate 2 and 2/3 of his loaves, gave the hunter 2 and 1/3 of his loaves.

if the hunter ate 2 and 2/3 of the loaves, and his payment of 8 coins corresponds to every 1/3 of his share of the loaves (since 2 and 2/3 divided by 1/3 = 8), then the first shepherd gets just 1 coin, and the second shepherd gets 7 coins

The shepherd with 5 pieces of bread should take 7 coins and the shepherd with 3 pieces of bread should take 1 coin.

Because 8 pieces of bread divided by 3 people equals 2 2/3 pieces each. So the shepherd with 5 pieces of bread gave the hunter 2 1/3 pieces where as the shepherd with 3 pieces gave just 1/3 of a piece. So the shepherd with 5 pieces gave 7 times as much bread to the hunter.

There could be many answers: so here is a one then in mathematical form:
one had 5/another had 3...okay...then 5=A and 3=b, so X= A+B/2
5+3+8/2=4 since there were 2 men and they had 8 slices between them the hunter should give them 4 a piece becuase it 2 of them to feed 3 of them equally and fairly.

They had agreed to share equally, therefore the two shepherds shouldn't accept the hunter's money as payment for his meal.
