With displays like empty cans nailed to a piece of wood, or paint simply thrown across a canvas with no thought becoming more abundant and artists like Dali and DaVinci becoming more scarce...are we becoming blind to what is true art?

I think its gotten to a strange point where what we consider art is almost an anti-art...if you look at the works of some people whose prints, etc, sell very well to the mainstream, they paint with a lot of technical skill and finesse, although their works might lack a certain creativity. But what we see in high art circles and museums looks rather thrown together and pointless to some degree, yet it is seen as creative and artistic. There seems to be no one left who can harness both originality AND true artistic ability and create works of genius. I think a lot of the problem is perhaps that it has all been done so many times before, and we are reaching a sort of jaded state in which repitition is frowned upon rather than praised as traditional and lasting. For example if you think of, say, nude females in art; well, they have been there for quite some time now, but throughout time the exact treatment and representation has been different, and that has been ok. Now we see a painting of a nude female and think, so, a naked woman, so what? Show me something I HAVEN'T seen. I think in part this is due to our culture's constant insistance on change...we get bored with styles in music, fashion, etc., so quickly now! It's ridiculous. Many people have doomed themselves to unhappiness and constant cravings that can never be filled. We have gone from being consumers of material goods to consumers of culture, and all must go to the trash heap before the ink dries on the magazine page declaring it to be this year's big thing.

Art is exactly that Art. it's what it means to you and what you like. A lot of the time people are told that something is art and so they believe it because they don't want to appear that they don't have the proper breeding. For example I cant see that a flag in a groady toilet is art and I would not want it in my house but a lot of people say Mapplethorpe is genius and go into long discussions on what he meant by it. So if the piece does have Merritt the Merritt is that it gets people to discuss some subjects a little deeper. BTW I bought some Arte' quite a few years back because a friend I thought a lot of said it was wonder full. (it was a lizard coming out of a egg... LOL)

Perception is our own thing. I personally think abstract art is really questionable. I love Dali, his thinking is abstract but his art is amazing. Perhaps it has to due with our desire for modern designs, industrial numbness. With no true form in the art, you have the ability to express it any way you choose. Good question. I'll be thinking about this all day.

Each person takes art into consideration a different way. Just like there are different types of music. There can be no true definition for an art.

The truth is, we need to wake up and clear the trash.
Right now, people say a naked woman is art.

What is that?
That's stupid. Art lies under the paint. Not the skin.

i think you are going to get a mixed response to this one b/c everyone interprets art differently. you may consider the examples you mentioned simple but maybe there was a lot of contemplation in it, who knows. i don't think we have gotten to relaxed.

...they say that art reflects the social patterns...given world changes and politics, I'd say that. People have become apathetic, and the emphasis is on pathetic.
