It takes a lot of energy and a long "runway" for geese to get enough lift to get airborne, so they tend to walk unless they are migrating or flying from one lake to another. In addition, there is the summer moult. Unlike other birds, which shed and replace a few wing feathers at a time and can continuously fly, geese (and ducks) shed all their long wing feathers at the same time (usually in June-July) and are flightless until the new ones grow back in. This happens very quickly -- my domestic geese are moulting now and the feathers are dropping all over the place. So most geese you see at this time of year are walking because they cannot fly.

Since the goslings can't fly anyway, and the adults are big and aggressive enough to keep most predators away, this system works well for them. By the time migration time comes, both adults and juveniles have all their wing feathers and can take off for thier winter homes.

Because they're geese... they don't know the dangers of crossing the street... as most animals do not and probably never will...

because most places will fine or ticket drivers that hit and or kill geese. meaning that you really dont want to hit them. if people started hitting them they would probably take a hint and start flying
