I presume they just tell them that they wish to retract it.

Speak to the Police station where you made the statement. I think it will depend on why you want to retract the statement. If it is because you have found out something that you said in your statement was not true they will probably make an amendment to the statement. If it is because you are worried for your safety or that of your family they may be able to do something to help you.

You have to speak to your point of contact officer (the officer who took the statement) or the OCC (officer in-charge of case) to arrange to do another statement explaining why you are retracting your previous statement.
The police still have the power to investigate the crime with out your original statement tho, so sometimes it wont make that much difference.
Victim Support will be able to advise you, (they offer advice to witness' too.) or if it is going to court you should get a Witness Care Officer From the CPS who will be able to help you too.

Obviously by speaking to the officer who took your statement (or who is in charge of the case). So much depends on what you have witnessed and what your statement said. You sign your original (and any future) statement to say that you have told the truth and can be prosecuted for lying! You could get charged with wasting police time.
Think of your reasons and list them - explain them when you speak to the police. Tell them you are not prepared to attend court etc. and ask their advice. Are you scared you are going to get hurt by someone who is implicated in your statement?
Best advice is to go speak to the cops dealing and explain all!

You just inform the police. Firstly, dependant on what your statement says, I would first consult a solicitor in case you end up in trouble with the police.

Yes; but they could, in theory anyway, be charged with wasting police time. Although this does not happen very often.
