No, they would be shallower, but only by a teeny bit. Although the sponge, when dried out, is largely hollow, it does have a finite volume. This volume displaces some of the ocean, so the level rises.
To test the theory, put some water in a basin, mark the level, gently put in a few dry sponges. Make sure they are fully submerged.
If the level goes up, this shows that the oceans would be shallower without sponges.
If the level goes down, you have discovered a material with negative volume; don't stop running until you get to the patent office.

Nice try... The ocean would actually decrease. Because you would remove the sponge, and it's contents. Where do you think the water goes once it's absorbed into the sponge? Do you think it just disappears?

Oceans could be only so deep until you hit the core.
I don't think they would be deeper. They were moist when they were grown. If they were dry, then they would soak up alot of water.

He he he. Brilliant question. Love it. My answer would be keep sponges for trifles and deserts... or water-filled sponges for desserts...

Most sponges you see in shops are blown plastics...not real ones.

Nope, the sponge remains under water, so no water has actually been displaced.

Oceans would be shallower if fish stopped peeing in them.

you would have to take out all the whales and larger sea life., sharks, dolphins, octopus, you know sorta like you bath water, no wait, if you remove all that, then no it wouldn't me deeper, it wouldn't be as deep... right.
