If you're needing to avoid gluten you need to stay away from barley as well as rye and oats. Depends on how sensitive you are, even if you're not having any symptoms it could still be doing damage. My daughter has Celiac Disease, there are lots of good resources out there for knowing how to cope.

Barley has a small amount of gluten, but nothing compared to say Hard Winter Wheat from Canada which is 55% GLUE-ten.
