Although you may hear horror stories about root canals, I really don't think many of them are true. When I was 8 years old, I shattered my two front teeth on the pavement. The nerve survived on one, but not the other. I had a root canal when I was 13, and don't remember any pain at all. I was certainly anesthetized, so I couldn't feel it as they were doing it. Well, I take that back, I could feel like a "tapping" as they were irrigating the nerve, but it wasn't painful. I don't remember any pain afterwards, either. Once your nerve is gone, your tooth will turn brown (mine had slowly started to turn before I recieved the rooth canal). For aesthetic reasons, if the tooth is in a noticeable place, you may want to have a crown placed overtop of the tooth.

But from my experience, they don't hurt at all. Good luck with it!

Do not panic. I was the worst with dentists, my fear was dreadful. A friend of mine was a 4th year dental student and he suggested I let him do a filling for me. I don't know how he did it but he completely cured me of the fear. The students are under constant supervision. A root canal is not painful, don't listen to the hype. You will have plenty of anaesthetic and you won't feel a thing. I promise you I could have dropped off to sleep during a root canal once. You'll be fine.

If the dentists can get you good and numb - then it should not hurt at all. I would request "laughing gas" - that will make you really relaxed. Also ask for some pain killers for after wards. Don't worry, it won't hurt for too long!

Expect your prayer life to increase tomorrow. Stop thinking about the pain. THink about the day after. Get it done.
