I'll answer this question with another question: why do white pants make your butt look bigger? Possibly for the same reason.
Here's a better explanation about creating visual space at Comstockhomes.com

This is not always true! There are many veriables. But, It has a lot to do with the amount of light in the room and the contrast in darkness with other colors that make it seem bigger. You can decorate with darker colors, sharing the walls, trim and doors with slightly darker or lighter shades of colors. This will give you the same effect as having everything white or lighter colors. I work for a major paint company and have been in paint industries for over 20 years.

Rooms appear bigger with white because it reflects light instead of absorbing it, but it also makes the room look very cold and uninviting. Use a color, use lighting and mirrors to bring life to a room. I love to use earth colors in a room, they are very inviting and cozy. Try Lowe's Earth Element line, it is awesome paint!!! When using mirrors, only use one well place, well designed mirror. Let it reflect something beautiful, like a piece of art, lighting, or window. We have a small master bath, I placed a large 6ft mirror with a large silver chunky frame to expand the room ( the room is painted sueded leather, a brown) it helps expand the space and bounces light around it making it appear bigger.

Reflects the light giving the illusion of a larger area. Whereas dark colors absorb the light. Supposedly, painting your walls light and your ceiling dark gives the illusion of a large room.

Because it looks more open, windows and mirrors also help it to look bigger.

Our eyes play trick on us when it comes to colors. Have you gotten those emails where you think you are seeing one thing, but that's really not what it is? It's a good thing though.
