A proper swing is key. If you can't strike the ball well, forget about it.
You must swing down on the ball with your irons and make solid contact. A high shot is one that has a higher likelihood of backing up. And like someone else said, use a soft ball i.e. not a Top-Rock.

hit the ball at a very steep angle, like greater than 45 degrees. come down sharply and hit the ball BEFORE hitting the ground. divot should be about 2-3 inches in front of your ball. can't do it? they make wedges with textured faces, like Purespin, that grab the ball better than a regular wedge. usually the wedge surfaces are almost like sandpaper but harder. it the easiest way to do it without all the practice. you get to show off in front of your friends too.

Basically there are 2 factors involved. A descending club head angle and swing speed. The more of each....the more spin.
