A visit to the doctor a few days ago and I found out I've got acid reflux. I was prescribed Nexium. I have been exercising to decrease my weight, and I've also changed my eating habits. Now is there really a cure?

Yes...changing your eating habits was a great start. Did you eliminate carbonated beverages? That is one of the biggest problems and cut back on grease and spices.

Sometimes taking medicine will actually cure reflux.

Once the esophagus gets burned by the stomach acid, the lining of the esophagus swells/becomes inflamed. This actually makes it easier to reflux thus causing more inflammation (vicious cycle). Taking medicine for a while will help heal the lining, making it more pliable and returning it back to it's normal healthy state. Some people get a long term cure from this, especially if combined with a change in eating habits and weight loss.

There is a surgical cure called Nissen Fundoplication. This procedure is usually done Laparoscopically ("keyhole surgery") and usually involves a 1-2 day hospital stay. Results: After 2 years over 90% of those who had the surgery are satisfied with the results. Most are off of the Nexium type of drugs or are taking them much less. Unfortunately morbidity (things not turning out exactly right) ranges from 2% to 17%.

Another surgical option is endoscopic suturing of the esophagus (a.k.a. endoscopic cinch). This is done through a fiberoptic scope down your esophagus. Long term results aren't available yet so we're not sure how well this is going to work in the long run.

Hope this helps.

Chronic heartburn is usually from acid reflux - stomach acid is getting past the little valve and into your esophagus. You also should know some natural ways to treat your heartburn. Learn them here https://bitly.im/aM9Ry

The most immediate thing you can do is to stop drinking coffee and cola. Smoking is not good either, but that might be harder to stop. Don't over-eat. Don't lie down too soon after eating. Don't burp too much - this carries acid up with the burp.

heartburn the most common symptom of acid reflux disease (also known as gastroespohageal reflux disease, or GERD). Heartburn feels like a burning pain in the center of the chest. It is caused by acid from the stomach backing up into the esophagus. is a symptom of acid reflux disease (GERD) Also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

I had acid reflux, and was developing a ulcer. But it`s all gone now. I had it after I had my baby. My doctor prescribed Nexium also, didn`t really help. I wanted to lose weight, and got on the ShapeWorks Weight Management Program. I have lost 6 lbs and 7.25 inches in my first week. I ate whatever I wanted to, and no more pain or anything like that. They help with acid, and ulcers. I really recommend you try it. It didn`t do this only for me, I have many friends that had the same problems, and they all good now. I don`t think it cures, cause it sure might come back. But it hasn`t come back for me...sooo

I don't believe there is a cure but changeing your diet, loosing weight and taking your prescription should help you. I take Prevacid and have been taking it for years. I take it daily and I do well. I need to drop about 15-20 pounds though. Have you had an upper GI yet? You may want to look into that as well to see how bad your GERD really is.

I have acid reflux too. Mine is not from eating or drinking, its from stress. I would minimize caffeine and alcohol. If I wanted any of those, I would take two antacids before and two 4 hours later, and usually i am fine. I stay away from spicy foods, or eat them every once in a while. I also have activities to decrease stress. Just taking these few steps, I am no longer on Prevacid, which is what I was prescribed.

If losing weight and sleeping in a more upright position at night and the medication prescribed doesn't work, maybe you have a hiatal hernia that could be repaired. I know they do it laporoscopically. Only your doctor can tell you if this is the cause.
