Cannot read from the source file or disk.’ Some of the files originating from exactly the same source were successfully copied.

I can create a shortcut of one of the problem files onto the hard drive. When I try to use the shortcut to open the document in Word I get prompted for a password, type in the password but another refusal message appears. All this is very slow—you see the hourglass for minutes and can hear the CPU churning-away.

Important question: is this a virus matter? Can you tell me how to solve the problem from the ground up? How would you perform the purging? Or else are these files doomed? Are we all doomed on this planet??? [EVIL LAUGH]

providing the media isn't damaged (scratches, exposed to magnetic fields)...

it could be your floppy drive...

Share one out on another system on the lan and see if you can read and write to that one.

Also, you're not trying to copy more bytes then the floppy can hold, are you?

Finally... If you suspect VIRUS activity.... scan it with a known good virus protection package.

I'm almost leaning towards your floppy drive having issues. You could purchase a new one for under $20.00 and always return it if that doesn't solve the problem. I have seen this many times with some of your computers on the network...everytime I replaced the drive the problem disappeared. You might also think about using a flash drive from now on...much more easy to use, reliable and convenient. You can pick up a 256 meg drive for around $20.00

Good Luck.

Doesn't sound like a virus to me.
From the sound, the floppy disk may be your culprit. Your computer seems to be having a hard time reading it, which is a good sign that the disk is damaged, and/or corrupted.

Try a diffrent disk, just to rule out it being your disk drive.
But, regardless, I'd say your files are toast.
I hope you have them backed up somewhere.

Try this.
I don't know your level of knowledge so I will try to assume nothing.
Make sure the floppy is in the drive
click start run
type cmd
in the command window that opens
type chkdsk a:
if it returns problems
type chkdsk /f
this should fix the problem files
