Even though it should only have the two layers I think it maybe possible to make it three if the whisky is a liqueur type eg. Drambuie as this will be heavier than the coffee.
So I would put the liqueur in the bottom then slowly pour in the coffee already made up (possible over a spoon), then use a fine dollop of double cream ( or you could use squirty can cream) on top.
Good luck. Let me know if it works.

The best way to make an irish coffee, first 1.5 shot of Jameson Irish Whisky in a toddy glass, then pour 4 shots of sweetened filter coffee, then mix 1 shot of double cream with 1 shot of Baileys irish cream, and float on top.
Trust me, this is the best way to do it!!!
It should theoreticaly be possible to float the coffe on the whiskey, but as there density is very similar, it woud be very difficult. just try the method mentioned above for the best Irish coffe this side of Dublin!!!

Only way I can think of is to try and put a wee bit of cream between the whiskey and coffee. They are two of the same type of matter, so they will mix automatically. Don't know how they did it???

Working in a bar in Ireland, we used to have a cup of boiling water to dip a tablespoon in just before scooping the cream. This helps the cream slowly slide of and rest just on top of the coffee!
